Combined Effects of Ofloxacin with other Antimicrobial Agents Against Streptococcus pneumoniae, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Abstract
Background :
@EN As ofloxacin is one of the frequently used drugs, combination with other drugs should not have antagonism. Limited knowledge on the effect of combination with other antimicrobial agents prompted this study.
@ES Method :
@EN The combined effect of ofloxacin with other antimicrobial agents, against common pathogens of both community- and nosocomially-acquired lower respiratory infection, were tested by the agar dilution checkerboard method. The fractional
inhibitory
concentration index were interpreted <0.5, synerfism; 0.5-o.75. indifference and>275, antagonism.
@ES Result:
@EN The combinations of ofloxacin with penicillin G, erythromycin, clindamycin or tetracycline showed additive or indifferent effect against Pseudomoras pneumoniae depending on the strains. Against 2 isolates of methicillin-resistant
Staphylococcus
aureus (MRSA), ofloxacin with methicillin showed synergism, while against others, addition and indifference. The combinations with erythromycin, clindamycin, or fosfomycin showed additive or indifferent effect. Against some Pseudomonas aeruginosa
strains, ofloxacin with piperacillin, ceftazidime, gentamicin or fosfomycin showed synergism. None of the combinations showed antagonism against S. pneumoniae, MRSA or P. aeruginosa.
@ES Conclusion:
@EN This in vitro test suggests that administration of these drugs do not result in antagonism and can expand the spectrum of coverage.
